At AFBS, we’re committed to finding treatments for Nemaline Myopathy (NM) through a diverse array of research approaches. From gene therapy to small molecules and disease management strategies, we’re investing in initiatives that hold the most promise for our community and we’re thrilled to share an exciting update on a groundbreaking Nemaline Myopathy exosuit research project led by Dr. Jonathan Realmuto at the University of California, Riverside.

Cutting Edge Nemaline Myopathy Exosuit Research

This initiative, fueled by your generous contributions to AFBS, is making significant strides in developing a soft robotic garment. The garment, known as an exosuit, is directly tailored to the needs of individuals with NM. Dr. Realmuto’s exosuit is designed to provide crucial support for everyday activities such as sitting-to-standing transitions, maintaining balance, and standing-to-sitting movements and this research is showing great promise.

Unlike existing solutions, this exosuit prioritizes comfort. Dr. Realmuto’s design emphasizes extended wear without causing discomfort to the user. By harnessing the power of cutting-edge soft robotics technology, his research has the potential to revolutionize mobility assistance for the Nemaline Myopathy community.

Dr. Realmuto’s Pioneering Research

Dr. Realmuto and his team are currently conducting human evaluations to refine the exosuit prototypes further. One of the participants in this critical stage of Nemaline Myopathy exosuit research is Liv, a young member of the NM community. The evaluation process includes full-body scans and anthropometric measurements to ensure a precise fit for the exosuit. Watch the video below for a glimpse of Liv as a member of Dr. Realmuto’s team scans her for her custom fitted exosuit!

Your Support Makes a Difference

Your ongoing support is instrumental as we strive to realize this vision of accessible, comfortable, and effective mobility assistance for our community. Funding from generous donors like you allows AFBS to champion groundbreaking research projects like Dr. Realmuto’s Nemaline Myopathy exosuit research. This research offers immense hope for people living with NM.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this inspiring journey together!
